01/2015: Bye bye Chiquita!

Hi folks. I have been pretty busy with the semester projects (see type magazine layouts and Frisches Design documentation) and with exhibitions, portfolio updating, relauching the website and arranging some nice series (check out here), doing some research about other photography and fine art schools and also some agencies and photographers that may be in for an internship. I also had some commissions and some personal stuff to deal with. So here’s a belated 2015 warm-up featuring some pictures and stories from last fall until now.

Starting off, some impressions from the “Frisches Design 2014” exhibition/conference. This was some night before the start when we set up the big plastic donuts

09/2014: Strom aus ♥

Hello.
The last weeks have been really exhausting, work-wise, i’m looking forward to find some rest and some time to lean back in the winter holidays and to review the last year with all its ups and downs, its little unexpected joys and strenuous setbacks.
I hope you will too, because from time to time you just need to hold on to question yourself, your goals and ideals and to reflect on one more chapter of your journey.
So, uni-wise, we’ve been doing a whole lot the last few months: We filmed a documentary for Audiovisual Comm. class, did some advertising shoots for Photo class and created magazine layouts for Typo class.
Also i started doing some smaller commissions, which is cool because of the experience and the people i get to know and to work with. And then theres also some other photo projects im working on plus my complete portfolio which has to be revisited for the website.
So for now, here is the last entry for 2014, enjoy!

i9302_M2_TRIX_XTOL

Welcome to the world of the rich and famous!

04/2014: Clouds under a bridge

Some new and not so new stories because i just started developing C-41 again. Lots of uni stuff, exhibs, festivals, excursions and of course photo class stuff going on. Some personal frames in between too. Im shooting a lot lately and i wouldnt wanna miss it. Not as much street as i would like to though, but that’ll change soon.

[audiotube id=”-4PJ5SknlrE” time=”no”]
i8007_HEXAR_EKTAR_TETHeres what happens if youre shooting with several cameras: Your chronological order will be pretty much fucked up. We ordered some film and paper for the photoclass and also two Tetenal C-41 Kits. So i started developing color negative film again in the lab at uni. Here are some older frames from around the start of 2nd semester.

i8008_HEXAR_EKTAR_TETSo it turned out that nobody had done some manual small tank development in the lab for years. Usually, large tanks are used wich are permanently installed and connected to fresh water. Very comfortable but not very much fun if you ask me. Plus they only hold bw chemicals. Time to do some C-41! So when we turned on the water we got several liters of yellowish-dirty water. After the water turned clear or what we thought looked clear again, we started filling some tanks to pre-heat the chemicals and the small tank. However a water temp of about 40°C was wayyy to optimistic since the water had been running for about 10mins already and the boiler tank was pretty empty. So we decided to dev at 30°C. After the final rinse the film looked pretty bad, probably because of dirty water, non-working fixer because of low temp or whatever. After throwing it in the fixer again for about 5 minutes and washing again we put the roll in the dryer for another 10mins and everything was fine. The first frames have a weird blueish (so orange-brown on the neg) teint along the top side (see above) but overall, the film looks pretty good. However, i do not recommend to improvise with the use of your chemicals the way we did, except you really need to. Things can get really inconsistent and i guess we were just lucky this time.
i8011_HEXAR_EKTAR_TETEvening sun.i8012_HEXAR_EKTAR_TETNice colors at my way to work. Ektar with mad saturation of course (In the Hexar AF).

Notice the kick-ass drying marks from the dirty lab water. I was pretty insecure whether to take a shot right in the face of a thousand people but im glad i did, though its not a masterpiece. It is more about the spirit and the will to document an unique moment. So in moments like these, you just ask yourself, are you or are you not a photographer? And then you just do it.

03/2014: Among friends

Things are on a constant move. The second semester of design studies has started and it is damn fun. We’re permanently learning a lot of stuff. Not in a here-go-read-that-800-pages-book-about-mechanical-engineering kind of way i got used to in the past but in a learning-by-doing kind of way which is very very cool. Plus i’m getting to know more and more people better, not only from my class but from all the design classes. They’re nothing but great. Besides that, Olga and i are more than happy in our new home and im still working on instead of in the darkroom. So here are some new pictures and stories.

[audiotube id=”xMr0ZkJCW_o” time=”no”]

i7491_HEXAR_POR400_RODINALThese are some random shots from the Konica Hexar AF and a roll of Porst 400 color negative film. Yes, color. But since i ran out of C-41 chemicals and i didnt want to spend money on getting a single roll of cheap film developed, i browsed the internets for alternative dev methods. Turns out that you actually can develop C-41 film in BW Chemicals (i did not know that). So long story short, i developed the film in Rodinal 1+100 for a good 60 minutes @ 20°C. Seems like this combo will develope just EVERY negative film more or less correctly.
i7495_HEXAR_POR400_RODINALThis film is already several months old, so i pretty much forgot about everything i captured with it. Some frames would have looked very nice in color i guess. Generally, when shooting color, i tend to focus on different things like an elegant combination of , yes, colors and a moody composition. With b&w, its more about light and shadows and geometric structures. So these are the frames that i think work good as monochromes too.
i7498_HEXAR_POR400_RODINALYou may notice the subtle accentuated grain.
i7500_HEXAR_POR400_RODINALIm also still having trouble with bromide drag (the lighter areas on the bottom of some frames) which is caused by too little agitation of the developer (stand development). But besides this and the massive grain explosion, the tonal range is rediculously good imo. This is Olgas former school building.

i7616_M2_K100_XTOLAFTER: Jupiter-12 35mm f/2.8. I got a new lens to use on the M2 since i do not want to switch the Zeiss from one M to the other all the time. But since im studying again im kind of on a budget and so i kept looking for a cheap alternative to 35mm cv/zeiss/leica lenses. In the end i bought a J-12 for 60€ and a ltm->m adapter for about 20€. See the difference in quality compared to the Zeiss shot? Yeah, me neither. The frames tend to get soft towards the corners and its pretty prone to flare. In the center area, its tack sharp. And hey, this is a 35mm M-mount lens for about 80€!

i7639_M2_K100_XTOLSo this is the J-12, a pretty solid bakelite lens. What looks kind of dull here is actually the front lens coating which is either yellow, blue, purple or whatever, depending on the manufacturer that produced the lens (several russian factories used to produce jupiter lenses back then). Focusing is easy, although i think im going to make a little focusing knob with a simple zip tie. (UPDATE: Done, works like a charm!) Changing the aperture (which is NON-click!) is somewhat fiddly as the inner ring has to be turned and it only protrudes slightly from the focusing barrel. I love it.

i7671_M2_ACROS_XTOLDominik and Kerim, two of our great illustrators, were occupied by young wannabe-artists the whole time.
i7674_M2_ACROS_XTOLSimon and his shirt #1.
i7676_M2_ACROS_XTOLMinimal stuff.
i7677_M2_ACROS_XTOL
i7678_M2_ACROS_XTOLI finally managed to install the kitchen clock since olga bothered my for weeks. I think it looks nice up there.

i7679_M6_TRIX_XTOLGünter and i layed new floor tiles in my grandmothers apartment. Great view from up there.
i7679_origThis is a more original version with frame borders and the toning from colour scanning. I decided to file out the frame of my SA-21 negative carrier. Worked perfectly. I usually crop the frames for this blog anyway, but its nice to have and looks great on (digital) prints. As for scanning bw negs as colour, im not sure yet if theres any real improvement on quality, so ill keep experimenting.

i7682_M6_TRIX_XTOL
i7683_M6_TRIX_XTOLNext day, after work cig. M6, trix, xtol btw.
i7686_M6_TRIX_XTOLSome construction stuff at one of my favorite restaurants. They installed some huge light tubes that create a very ambient scene.
i7687_M6_TRIX_XTOLDidn’t know that.

i7731_M2_TRIX1600_XTOLWe also painted some mannequin parts. Basti took a snap with his phone, so i could take a decent frame of busty Christian right when his flash popped.
i7732_M2_TRIX1600_XTOLStephan also designed two skateboard decks with black & white paint and matching markers. I like how the different layers actually separate from each other for they were hardly visible in that little light.

02/2014: On the move on the spot

Here are some new frames. Still almost all 35mm. Since i’ve been busy with uni stuff, work and also moving to a new place, i did not feel much like taking well-composed mf shots, but rather like documenting all kinds of things quick and dirty with the rangefinder family.

Sorry about this, shitty GEMA won’t let me get this via youtube.

i7452_M6_TRIX_XTOLOlga and i decided to move in together. So after looking for places for several weeks we found a very nice apartment near my old place. Moving day, we had lots of helping hands like Stephan and Anselm. Shot a roll of trix with the M6 because, you know… i7453_M6_TRIX_XTOLOlgas dad and cousin installed the kitchen. i7455_M6_TRIX_XTOLThe guest room. i7456_M6_TRIX_XTOL i7457_M6_TRIX_XTOLIn my old apartment, disposing some stuff and used chemicals. i7458_M6_TRIX_XTOLThats 5 years of smoking. i7415_M2_TRIX1600_XTOL I’ve been using HC-110 as my main developer for about a year now. I cant help it but to be honest i do not like it that much. Especially for pushing. It gives me very contrasty negatives with very little shadow or highlight detail. That might be due to its relatively upswept curve or due to my developing and scanning habits or probably both.I tried different temps and different steps in scanning and post but i was not really satisfied. I began thinking, maybe it is just a hardware/software thing that came with my switch from the Canoscan + Silverfast to the Coolscan + Vuescan. I happened to get a very cheap pack of Xtol and developed this first roll of Kodak Tri-x pushed to 1600. The negatives came out exactly how i remembered and loved them last year. So for now, Xtol is on the table again! I will try HC-110 with slower speed films such as Kentmere 100 and Fuji Acros. I guess it’s all a matter of taste, but for me, nothing beats Tri-X with Xtol. Oh yeah, this is at the facultys annual exhibition of the graduates work. 05/2013: “I think you should keep doing that as a hobby.”

Oh boy its another template again! I cant help it. To be honest im not even sorry. I just  love to play with css. Whatever. This post will be rather personal than other ones, for reasons. Lots of pictures about family stuff of course. But also some stories about my work life or profession or whatever you may call it. You know that feeling when you go to work everyday and it feels ok? Not great, just ok. You do it because you can, because you get paid for it, because its comfortable. You just function and do stuff and you tell yourself “well it may not be what i dreamt of but a time will come. Be realistic. Whats to grumble about? Just be patient and wait” You know that feeling? Well i do. And there came a point where i asked myself “Wait? wait for what?” And for some reason i could not answer that question. That was back when i made the decision to apply to college again. People i told about this noticed “oh nice, so youre going to get your engineering masters degree?” and i answered “well, not exactly.”
[audiotube id=”JtKQZLbdEzw” time=”no”]
More on that in the post itself. This one contains much text, dont freak out. You can of course skip my confession writing ego trip stuff and just look at the pictures.

i4841Starting with some casual Südstadt frames. This is the Hexar, loaded with Ilford Delta 400. Mid-speed films shot in bright sunlight tend to give hard contrasts anyway, so i decided to push it a little more and souped the roll in Rodinal 1+25.

i4842As expected, contrast is dominating. However the tones are really nice in most frames.

i4844This was in mid-June. People demonstrating for Taksim. If youre not that familiar with the topic you might wanna check out this documentary from Simon Becker, who was right there in Istanbul and captured some intensive moments when things started to escalate.

i4846 i4847 i4855At some flea market.

i4856Cigarette

i4858 i4859I know its boring but i just like these kinds of structures and patterns, plus the grain is really nice. Only two years to get a clean, even negative.

i4860 i4863One for the former smoker-me.

i4865 i4867So after weeks of rain and depressive dark days the weather got better again. Finally.

i4870Some factory building outside Neustadt.

i4873What remains.

i4874Since it was midseason, we decided to pick some strawberries. “Some” somehow became 3 kilograms.

i4876So each of us got a bucket with about 1,5kg of strawberries. That was literally all i ate the entire weekend.

i4877Some pickers in the background.

i4889Remember?

i4891This is Fuji Neopan 400 in Rodinal 1+50.

i4892So we had some fun time shopping. Except that i didnt.

i4896 i4897As soon as it started to rain, people start running for cover, which i always find kind of amusing. This guy didnt seem to care about this wuzz at all.

i4903 i4905

i4908Opposites.

i4909

i4914Another sunday morning flea market with cute puppies!

i4915 i4918Later that weekend, lunch at my uncles place. Checking out the pictures of our boat trip some weeks ago.

Coburg. Next roll. Kentmere 400 in Xtol.

Sign on the left says “Frankonia! Apprentice stabs cousin to death at party!” So thats whats going down here. Were pretty mad people. Well, not really.

What an adventure!

Random

My mother in the studio. Thinking of stuff.

i4942 i4943 i4945-2This roll of film has seen the inside of a camera before.
i4947 i4948Challenge accepted!

i4949 i4953Stopped by at fotomax for some camera strap, all they got are these sun-sniper kind of things. Pretty usable for your big DSLR, but damn ugly. This guy is testing some equipment right outside the store.

i4955Südstadt, my favorite greengrocer.

i4956 i4959I wonder what i looks like from inside.

i4960 i4964Finishing the roll.

i4966-2So the other day i felt like shooting some street with the Rolleiflex. Since i recently bought some rolls of Efke 25 i loaded the little gem and went for a walk. Sry about the border across the frame in the top area, that is from an obviously misaligned glass i put on top of the negatives. Helps a lot with flatness though.

i4969-525ASA shoots surprisingly well hand-held.

i4974-10 i4975-11Ok, not so street-ish, but wow at those tones the efke produces!

i4976-12

i4989b

Back to 35mm. Back to Leica. Except that it is not the M6. Actually it was a rather impulsive decision, but the other day i spotted a really good deal for a recently CLA’d M2 with a superb black Zeiss C-Biogon. I immediately thought to myself “this is the real thing!” and just went for it. Since i got the Hexar i dont use the M6 as frequently as i used to, so i thought, why not give it a try. (Plus the deal was really really good. The body is a real user but with fresh service, the lens is new)

i4985Oh yeah and another thing: Since i ran out of Xtol i was in the mood of playing around with something new, so i bought a bottle of Kodak HC-110 which here in Europe comes as very highly concentrated syrup in a 1l bottle. It is recommended to make a 1+3 stock solution for better handling. That means, it is way easier to measure and pour correctly from A to B. Plus your bottles and scales will be easier to clean because the stock does not stick to it like the syrup does (it really does, feels like maple syrup or honey so make sure to clean all your stuff really good to get rid of possible residues from the developer.)

i4986So these are some frames from the M2 with C-Biogon, Fuji Acros in HC-110. People dancing for some reason.

i4991Cute little fellow.

i4992 i5009 i5003Made me think of this. Nice tattoos though!

i5005So we had some lunch when these guys passed by.

i4979HC-100: great tones. C-Biogon: great rendering and smoooooth bokeh.

i5002 i4977 i4995Well heres another story: as mentioned above, i applied at Nuremberg University. Not for Engineering but for Design (with photography being a major subject ofc). I have had this crazy idea in my mind about becoming a designer/photographer/writer/whatever creative stuff since a long time, but somewhere along the way it got lost. Until now. So as i said, at some point, i told myself “just go and try it, you have nothing to lose. They could turn you down, thats all. PS: Youre a pussy if you dont do it!” It was back in march when i took this decision and so i had some time to select some pieces, write some documentation stuff and design my portfolio (which i never did before). I handed in the folder in may.

perlen4erSince im not necessarily an award-winning drawer, i put together a collection of small series of both analog and digital pictures i took in the last years. This here is a cycle of 4 abstract water stills i took about a year ago.

seatbelt1 seatbelt2More abstract stuff from another series.

seatbelt3All the analog stuff i handed in is featured in previous blog posts: some street shots from Nuremberg train station and from Paris as well as some stills from Prien am Chiemsee and from a walk in the woods. So im not gonna show that again.

i4978About a month later i recieved a letter from the college saying that my portfolio was approved and that i was invited to the qualifying examinations in july. That was when i slowly started getting nervous. So july came and i took the tests, here is some of the stuff we had to do. Day 1: written exam, designing a bookcover and drawing a storyboard.

i4990Day 2: Photography (actually we had to choose between drawing, photography and filming. Not so hard choice for me). Prof Jostmeier gave us a quick early morning briefing on the topic and the time schedule in the photo studio. I was torn between throwing up from anxiety and the urge to document this. We were all just nervous as hell but somehow i still wanted to capture this moment, knowing that it would be very intense and unique. Well, for me at least. Its always personal after all.

i4998So after several hours of shooting we returned to the college and had some time for selecting, post production and for writing a down some lines about our approach on the topic.

i4916The topic for photographers was “Zeitspiegel//Spiegelzeit” which means something like “time//reflection”. These are three of the images i submitted.

i4925 i4998i5000Girls viewing their portfolios. i5000 btw. Way to go. After we had finished the drawing/picture taking/filming part, we got back our folders and waited for an individual talk with one of the professors. In the end, those two days went pretty good and its again time to wait for a response. If you have questions about the whole process of application or about specific tasks, feel free to drop me a note.

i4984Ok, back to normal life. Later that day, i had a look at the annual student exhib i mentioned before. As always, very interesting stuff and great people.

i5006 i5010Guy taking pictures of some of the installations.

i4987 i4996Time to lay back and just relax. Finally!

i5016Last roll with the M6. Ektar, labdev. Its like in the wild nature.

i5023 i5034Whats wrong?

i5046 i5048Some stuff going on at Nuremberg castle.

i5049i5019 i5022

i5054Some regular bw again. M2, Kentmere 100 in Rodinal.
[audiotube id=”jDqRN9RbzIc” time=”no”]

i5055These papers looked kind of scientific, weird deja-vu.

i5057We decided to have a small barbecue. Dont mind the very blown-out highlights here, still fighting with crappy Silverfast SE.

i5059I live on the 2nd floor, so i just dropped a cable out of the living room window to power my macbook (old Simpsons episodes!) Well, its just a very dull backyard…

i5060 i5064 i5067Hey buddy!

i5069 i5071I remember that on this day, it was incredibly hot outside, like 35°C. I walked around for half an hour in the sun and was completely exhausted. She probably felt the same.

i5074 i5077This was about those 2 guys inside the store checking out some instruments. Worked out great. Yeah.

i5079 i5081 i5083 i5085Probably the best thing to do on this day.

i5091Some more Acros stuff.

i5095So the summer came and it came like a punch in the face! We decided to spend that sunday at the lake.

i5097Still funny that some people didnt seem to care about the outside temps at all.

i5099At the annual Classical Open Air, which takes place in the nice spacious Luitpoldhain park here in Nuremberg. Sun was already gone and there i stood with my 100 ISO film.

i5100That was around 8pm, most people had occupied the place hours ago. Acros rules here.

i5102I remember when i was at the Open Air some years ago with my girflfriend at the time, it was not that crowded and we could easily find a comfy place for our blanket an hour before the start. Here, everything you see from the foreground to the trees in the very background is actually people listening to the concert. Ridiculously overrun. The week after i read in the paper that there were some 75k people in the audience that night.

i51041/8th.

i5105There was a glitch in the matrix.

i5106 i5107Let the nature in!

i5113 i5114Some weird stuff again at the train station.

i5115 i5117This one is about nothing specific i think.

i5119Curious kid.

i5121 i5123 i5124 i5125

i5128The next weekend, Chris joined our little hangout behind the building. This is the smoothest roll of Delta 100 i shot since ever. M2/Zeiss again.

i5130Spent the day at the outdoor bath. I really love Delta in HC-100 at the moment, it just gives some exceptional tones imo.

i5131

i5133Later that day, i went to this years showman/singer/songwriter festival, called “Bardentreffen”. That means hundreds of musicians and artists, music, shows and food all over the place.

i5135 i5136 i5137 i5138

i5139i5140Somebody had too much chili.

i5141 i5142So after one more day at the pool, i went to the festival again to take some more snapshots. when i later looked at the negatives i noticed that the lens (actually the filter in front of it, came with the M2), had gotten very smudgy from sun lotion or something, which added a nice summilux-like glowing look to about 12 frames of that roll.

i5143 i5144 i5145Kid playing the violin + glowing highlights from the dirty lens.

i5147 i5148 i5150Some musicians passed by. I wonder what they needed that for. Probably to party hard.

i5153 i5154i5155The only acceptable Mini. End of glowing frames here.

i5151Some small pieces of art my mother sold recently.

i5158 i5159 i5161 i5162Police freshmen getting in touch with the people.

i5163

i5164I did some adjustments on my hybrid workflow as well, meaning that i changed my scanning method and got rid of those toyish plastic canon film strip holders. I cut some cardboard masks to be able to place the strips correctly and directly on the ground glass. Then i put a plate of glass on top which i got from some picture framing. The results are decent and also slightly sharper then with the film holder. Plus i can do this: digital contact prints of the entire roll (PS stitched of course). This is pretty neat to learn something about your metering and your general style of shooting. So here is the contact sheet of aboves Delta frames. You can clearly see that frames 14, 28 and 33 are underexposed, 1 and 29 are overexposed. Frames like 4, 11, 13, 15 already show a great tonal range (this is a completely untouched scan). Dirty lens from frames 16 to 27. Since i also did a little more experimenting with the process in Silverfast and the post production in LR and PS, i will probably set up a separate post on this topic the discuss all this stuff in detail. Let me know if youre interested. So whats important here: contact sheets -> great tool to review your work.

Ill make a cut here and push the next 5 rolls to the next post since this one is getting longer and longer.

i4883To conclude this post, a quick still of the new old workhorse.

Oh yeah, the college story. So after another month i finally recieved a letter from the university in august. It said that i made it through the qualification tests and that i have been approved. Some day later i went to the college office and handed in my matriculation files. About a week ago (mid august) i got the universities final confirmation. Wow. This autumn, im going back to college. Not for what is reasonable and appropriate, but for what i love to do.

03/2013: mixed stuff, lots of equip and finally some sun!

[audiotube id=”dgrNblNa_2Y” time=”no”]

April showers bring May flowers! Well, kind of. Indeed, a couple of things are changing currently. New perspectives, totally different job prospects and ideas are popping up in my mind and getting more and more serious. In fact the period from having this crazy yet inciting idea to an actual solid plan was about 2 months. And yep, that’s all i can tell you by now. Things have to be decided and stuff has to be done before i can tell you the whole story behind this.
However, the one thing that is definitely not changing is me taking pictures. Heres a new collection, enjoy!

at some flea market.

sunlight was rare these days,
, which seemed to affect some peoples mood.
oh, these frames here are shot on trix btw.

and again. some jerks keep rioting at the local store every 5 months or so. guess thats why they removed all _really_ nice stuff from display.

Erlangen depression.

Not much going on.

Having some tea at the station.
still in the book.

future ping-pong champion?

weird snow at night. 1/2s.

messed up bikes.

yep, thats a typical friday afternoon.

we all need our personal space.

Nice headphones i thought.

he asked for a shot.
well he didnt and was actually kind of annoyed. what a shame, that frame i like very much, light-wise.

sneaky peaky through some hotels window.
at the helmut jahn exhibition. huge huge images, impressive. some very nice sketches and drafts too.

having some more coffee. and tea. actually its only tea for me.
more weird train station stuff.

classic frame.

attentive dog and curious boy.

countryside walk, somethings weird…

having selfmade spaghetti at tanjas & eugens place. didnt think thatd make such a nice toned frame.
shot a roll with the rolleiflex but couldnt find any inspiring scenes. this was the only frame that turned out ok. in the middle of nowhere.
loaded the leica with some pro 400h.

late afternoon sunrays make us happy!

Germanisches Nationalmuseum.

nice light.
skating
that wouldnt have worked in b/w i guess.

clothing collection.
two frames with the hasselblad.
just to remind myself: this was actually march.
ok this is it: to be more flexible with b/w and color i came up with the idea of getting a new camera, but maybe a bit cheaper then a M. my plan was to go for a nice ricoh or contax p&s but after some weeks looking on ebay and classifieds i happened to make a ridiciously good deal on a like-new hexar af. this is the first test roll of trix.

That didnt look right.

focus seems spot on.
and man it is one sharp 35mm lens, despite the crappy 9000f flatbed.
however, sometimes i miss a good old focus tab.

curious kids.
some jam that looks quite nice in b/w.

at a demonstration.
dogs have the easier life.

hi
nice dude with his friend.
yep, train station again. deal with it.

something going on?

one random still frame from a walk with the flex.
and two frames from a recent project about which i will talk in detail in one of the upcoming entries. pan f plus here.

back to hexar and trix.

olga doing some research for an art history project.
fabians place, he and christina showed some pics from their trip to india. please enjoy my af skills.

nice little store.

nice bus.
urban geometry.
i did.

some broccoli
guy testing a tele lens.

some more spring fair shots. the weather was pretty nice for a few days, so this is actually the first roll of acros this year (that was around march/april).

remember, back when we were still cool?

opposites attract i guess…
funny light.

two scans from polaroids shot with the hasselblad + pola back on fuji fp 100

alumnium and sheet metal scrap. makes a weird still on pan f plus.

hey there!
at the faber-castell academy.

that strangly reminds me of some engineering courses.

acros is just great.
look up. the end.

02/2013: skiing and lots of random central station stuff

[audiotube id=”MNkaVmzgWgk” time=”no”]

Hey, ill be writing in english from now on. To be honest, it just bores me that there are about 2-3 people within a range of say 300km around Nuremberg who shoot street/reportage/documentary/whatever one may call it what i’m doing. Im well aware that theres a distinct concentration of photographers in large cities, although i find it kinda weird that Vienna seems to be some sort of street-maniac-magnet. Over here, nothing, tough i’ve been out on the Nuremberg streets for a couple of years now. Oh yeah well, i once saw this guy with what i guess was a rangefinder, shooting not in that typical 45 degree tourist pose (“wow look at that amazing church!” – “better use the flash for some extra sharpness! (Not that i would know how to NOT use it. Ever.)”) but mostly horizontally which puts chances slightly higher that he was doing something like street. Yeah, once.
In terms of connecting with people, sharing experiences and thus getting to know different kinds of people and points of view and further on being able to reflect one’s own thoughts about the subject, this just sucks. Hard.
Well, enough of this weeping and whining, things are not that bad because at least there ARE (random) people about whom this entry mainly is about. Enjoy.

starting with trix 2+. new years

lines and curves

Outside, lots of smoke from firecrackers
Lots of work and the weather has been pretty bad since christmas. So i decided to make the most out of it and started shooting at the train station area after work.
refilling a drinks vending machine.
not impressed

small laundry inside the train station
buying a palm tree #1
#2
#3

1.4 in the dark. the trained eye may notice a slight vignetting from the old summilux
angles, angles everywhere
Next roll, trix normal. I recently did some minor metering and dev adjustments, so no need for pushing trix at the station anymore.
remains

checking arrivals
queuing

looking over some old negs.
one week later
it’s hockey match day!

the weather still sucked
hum, i was a little too slow for this one. still like the matching lines
nappy pigeons
underground stuff
this old lady put our her money in super-slowmotion, the cashier girl was obviously pretty bugged. what a spectacle
rather annoying ladies, jumping out of the subway and starting to argue with me about god and stuff right away

girl checking arrivals. great light in the middle hall
as well as in the underground station, altough a little more light is needed, proven by wild lux-flares

people…
…being…
…people

finishing the roll
next roll of trix, 400 – 800, shot with the xa, tiny little helper. First few frames are still from last year. Here we visited the Neustadt christmas market
in trouble

local blacksmith presenting some stuff
nice bus
christmas present from a butcher somwhere outside Neustadt
so a couple of days before christmas my father thought it would be a great idea to walk on the iced frontyard, slipped and broke his fibula. we went to the hospital, lots of paperwork, lots of waiting. since i always have the little xa in my jacket, i took one frame for the album. end of story, he had to wear a leg splint for about 8 weeks
multitasking
so we went skiing (of course i was snowboarding since im so much cooler) with fabian and christina in stubai. i took the xa with me on the slope and shot some frames
having a break
aww
ok this one actually was overexposed very badly, but i liked it and so tried to recover some of the information in silverfast which worked out surprisingly well, regarding the (almost) black negative

promo stuff filmmaking at the rental store
what a view. probably the first picture i shot fully stopped down with the xa
a great day to go skiing, isn’t it?
back to the m6 which a also took with me but only shot some frames with on the side during the day

how lovely…

going for a walk

time for some more train station stuff

some jerks
nice vintage-looking buggy
you can actually read the “wtf” in his expression. not much was going on so i looked for something interesting worth framing when this classical looking guy came along with some kind of frame or poster or something. thought it would make a nice scene with the contrasty tones and straight lines
that cap looks damn soft
having a nap
would you look at this awesome puppys xmas sweater!
at the tram station

i really cannot express how ugly i find those kinds of boots. it’s like kitchen gloves for your feet
a wild lux flare appears – it was already pretty dark, i like how she seemed to be the only one of the group to notice me
finishing the roll
so olga gave me a 30 euros fotomax gift coupon a while ago, which i of course invested in films. i got 2 rolls of hp5+ and 2 of delta 400. yep, 30 euros. but i really needed some film and did not have any rolls with me, so i just bought it. anyway, i decided to gave the hp5+ a try. still xtol, still non-pushed. car broke down
bike broke down

young family
i picked olga up at the drug store. while waiting i saw these little buddies
snap!
making some advert layouts at work
somebody died
pharmacist in nice afternoon light
lots of forms in here, rectangles and circles and lines and all kinds of stuff. what a neat backpack!

back at the tram station, looking for something going on

guys doing some film work outside
this guy was fiddling around on the vending machines door for at least 10 minutes. i’m not even sure if he actually was maintaining the machine or just trying to get some change

stopped by at the press shop

now that’s a nice pastime

last frame
it’s been a while since i visited my mother’s place. so we had some tea and talked about this and that, i took some trix frames of the studio with the rolleiflex. the light there is just marvellous
ink tube still

this may be my favorite place whenever i need new inspirations
for a walk, it’s the delta400’s turn

my favorite shot of her so far, i gave a print to my mother a week later
having some tea at eugens and tanjas place
a little help from a cars headlight
after work, i headed to the city hall for signing the petition for a referendum against tuition fees and wow, the place was crowded

queuing again
more subway love
and more nice yet suspicious old ladies

meh…
suddenly…exhibition! right in the station’s middle hall. some very nice still and portrait shots

back to trix
lazy sunday, so we decided to hang out at a coffee house. they had a very nice collection of all kinds of bw prints

leftovers
i just like this little alley and its light and tones. this couple just happened to pass by and gave this scene an even more classical look.

more lazing
more coffee
these “buses” are just awesome, i always imagine that somebody shot it with some sort of shrink gun
close call
winter depression
guys being all enthusiastic about getting photographed
that looks warm

saw this fellow with his dog and had to take a snap. funny how they actually both looked right at me

kids being kids, the shop lady was rather annoyed
every few days or so, another “shop” opens in this little cabin. It’s all about the marketing
working on my metering. 18% gray is not always 100% right

ektar sale at some drug stores, they sold them for 2,15 euros per roll instead of 4,60 or so. i bought 25 rolls in total in 4 different stores. So all that’s left to do is to hope for some sunny days to come. Next post will be full of colour frames. it is on!

Fotografien, 1/2013

[audiotube id=”l2JAMnpldE4″ time=”no”]

Hallo hallo, treten Sie näher! Ein paar Neuigkeiten gibts.
–2. Blog: Habe die WP-Installation mal geupdated, also so richtig.

Versteckte, ruhige Ecken in St. Johannis. Normaler trix in der Flex.
Urlaub.

Warst beim Karstadt? Ja. Ich a.
Random Straßenzeug.

Beim Fotomax vorbeigeschaut.

Licht

Scheisse komponiert, aber das Licht war grandios.

Kunstlicht vs. Tageslicht. Trix ab hier.

Touristen

Ich hab also einfach ein wenig gewartet, was so kommt…

Jetzt also zum Thema Scannen. Ab sofort also Silverfast.

Zurück in Nürnberg, Christkindlesmarkt. “You dream it we live it”

Ooooooo

Weihnachten 3
Diesmal: Rouladen, dann Nickerchen. Trix @ 1600.

Trix normal.
Was essmer nur?

Was vom Christkindlmarkt übrig bleibt…

Kontrast make your head explode.
Steffi. So is doch schon besser.

Schien so gewollt.
Am Hammerwerk.

“Hochwasser”

Rest vom Portra. Schaufenster in Erlangen.

Wieder zurück in Nürnberg.

Was man halt so sieht…
A Stück fehlt noch.
Nach der Arbeit spontan über die Käffer. Stop in Kraftshof, was für ein beeindruckender Kirchengarten.

Es ist Hausarbeitenzeit!
Glücklicherweise nicht für mich.
St. Johann

hm?

Shuttleservice
Geldbeutelverkleinerungsservice

aww yiss

Immer fesch in Frankn!
Erstmal 3 im WegglnnNNNAOOOMM.

Dunkel dunkel für Acros. 1/8 auf.

Da is immer schön.
Und immer was los. Licht + Ultimate Frisbee = nice

Mal wieder viel zu voll.
Und wie gehts weiter?

Fotografien, 8/2012

It’s on. Viel Familie, Freunde, Sonstiges. Wie immer also.

Paris also.
